A goal from Khama Billiat helped Mamelodi Sundowns claim their third win in the Absa Premiership after playing out to a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars on Sunday, writes Dylan Appolis.
Pitso Mosimane’s side came into this encounter off the back of a defeat against Wydad Athletic Club during their exploits in the Caf Champions League.
Meanwhile, Roger De Sa’s men played out to a 1-1 draw with AmaZulu in their previous encounter on 23 September.
The Brazilians came out with intent in the opening exchanges and broke the deadlock in the second minute when Hlompho Kekana picked out Khama Billiat with his long cross before firing his effort into the back of the net.
At the other end, Dikwena were struggling to find rhythm in the match and failed to carve out any clear-cut opportunities in the final third.
Sundowns came close to doubling their lead in the 22nd minute, but Sibusio Vilakazi could not keep his effort down, blasting his effort over the target from close range.
Mbongani Mzimela came to his side’s rescue in the 40th minute when he produced a fine save to deny Billiat’s effort at goal.
Sundowns went into the half-time interval with a one-goal lead over Stars.
The visiting side kicked off where they left off in the first half and proved more of a threat in the final their than Dikwena.
Sundowns had another opportunity at goal in the 72nd minute when Kekana’s thunderous free kick forced Mzimela into making a good save to deny the midfielder.
Mosimane’s side thought they had doubled their lead five minutes later, but Percy Tau was flagged offside.
Sundowns managed to hold on to their one-goal lead over Platinum Stars till the final whistle to win the match and claim all three points at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
