Cape Town City have officially announced the signing of Venezuelan forward Darwin Jesus Gonzalez Mendoza from Deportivo La Guaira.

The 27-year-old has come in to bolster Eric Tinkler’s squad following the recent departures of Surprise Ralani, Abdul Ajagun, Edmilson Dove, Abbubaker Mobara and Fagrie Lakay.

Gonzalez was previously on the books of Venezuelan top-tier outfit Deportivo La Guaira, where he netted 31 goals and claimed 12 assists in 108 appearances in all competitions until he parted ways with the club in December last year.

City mentor Eric Tinkler explained why they brought him to the club and how his experience playing in Africa can help the club moving forward.

“Darwin has pace and creativity, very similar to what Ralani gave us, but he also has the ability to score goals. He can play either out wide or as a striker, so he gives us a lot of options in attack,” Tinkler said on CT City’s official Twitter page.

“He’s a fantastic acquisition. He’s someone who has played in Africa before with Etoile in Tunisia so he has CAF experience, and we’re happy to have him at our club.”
