Kaizer Chiefs striker Leonardo Castro is happy to be back on the field, relishing the chance to return to full fitness to work his way back into the Soweto giants’ starting lineup.
Castro made his first appearance for Amakhosi this past weekend when he played the final four minutes of their 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star recently came back from a five- month injury spell and last donned the Amakhosi jersey when they faced off against Wydad Casablanca in the semi-final of the Caf Champions League in June.
The Amakhosi striker rejoined the first team for full training a week ago but will not rush his way back to full fitness.
“It feels great to be back on the field,” Castro told his club’s official website upon his return.
“I was missing my teammates and being on the field, it was a tough time because the worst part of the injury was the recovery. I kept my patience and needed to be mentally strong in order to get back into the team as soon as possible. Now, I’ve managed to get back and I want to continue to work hard and improve my game every day.”
The Colombian was also questioned about his current state of fitness and he insists he is ready for the challenge that lies ahead.
“It is difficult because the season is on already and for me, there was no time to do a pre-season or friendly games or get into the rhythm. It was quite difficult, but I am going to work hard to help my team,” Castro said.
The 32-year-old is likely to feature in Amakhosi’s next game against Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu side, who are unbeaten in their last three DStv Premiership games.
“We have a strong squad. Almost all the players are available for selection, which is a good point for us. With these games coming in the week and on the weekend we are going to need everybody,” concluded Castro.
