Kaizer Chiefs welcomed Platinum Stars to the FNB Stadium on Wednesday as the Amakhosi looked to bounce back from a lackluster start to the season.

Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was called into action early on as he was on hand to parry an effort from Ndumiso Mabena. With the side struggling to string their passing together, Eric Mathoho dramatically cleared off the line to deny Stars an early lead.

William Twala had Chiefs’ first chance of the match as he fired narrowly wide from range in the 20th minute before Robert Ng’ambi put Dikwena 1-0 up with a cracking shot of his own just two minutes later.

Stars goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela did well to deny Edward Manqele a chance as he charged down a loose ball ahead of the striker. The shot-stopper was then on hand again minutes later as he kept out a goalbound Mathoho header.

Edmore Chirambadare had the final chance of the half for Chiefs but after his shot was parried, the half-time interval was sounded with the score reading 1-0 to Stars.

Chiefs began the second period in desperate search of a goal but neither side created any clear opening in the opening minutes. Mitchell Katsvairo then had a great chance as his header was tipped away in the 68th minute.

The Amakhosi finally got their goal just two minutes later as Hendrick Ekstein fired home after an excellent one-two. Stars refused to lie down, however, and with time running out the side pressured the Amakhosi by forcing a succession of corners..

Ultimately neither side was able to break the dealock as the final whilte blew with the scores all square at 1-1.
