Kaizer Chiefs came from two goals down to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over Polokwane City to go six points clear at the top of the league table.

Chiefs came into their second game since the restart searching for a big three points which would take them five points clear of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns after Pitso Mosimane’s men drew 1-1 with Highlands Park on Friday evening.

Polokwane City, in their first game since the Covid-19 disruptions, were also desperate for any sort of result to help lift them out of the drop zone.

Chiefs started on the front foot and almost opened the scoring through Samir Nurkovic, but the Serbian striker hit the side netting with his effort in the opening exchanges.

It was Polokwane, though, who took the lead when Lesiba Nku broke through the centre of the Chiefs defence before lobbing his shot over the advancing Daniel Akpeyi.

At the break, it was 1-0 to Rise and Shine.

Chiefs were then dealt a further blow 16 minutes after the restart when Jabulani Maluleke’s free kick took a wicked deflection before looping over Akpeyi and doubling City’s lead.

Amakhosi, though, would not lie down and began the comeback when Willard Katsande got on the end of a Samir Nurkovic flick-on at the front post following a corner to tap home and cut the lead to just one.

Four minutes later and Chiefs were level, Anthony Akumu nabbing the equaliser with his first goal for the Soweto giants.

Seconds later and Chiefs were ahead courtesy of their Serbian hitman, Nurkovic, who rifled a shot into the bottom left corner from distance.

Ernst Middendorp’s men then had a chance to seal the points when Keletso Sifama was hauled down into the penalty box. Daniel Cardoso stepped up but smashed his effort against the crossbar.

The miss mattered little, though, as Chiefs saw out the remaining minutes to seal the three points.
