Colombia striker Leonardo Castro has ended speculation regarding his future after Kaizer Chiefs announced that the forward has extended his contract with Amakhosi for a further two years.
Castro arrived at Naturena in January 2018 after leaving rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, where he enjoyed a trophy-laden spell.
His stint at Chiefs did not quite get off to the best of starts under, first, Steve Komphela and then Giovani Solinas.
Matters changed, though, when Ernst Middendorp arrived and, despite initially struggling to prove his worth, Castro went on to earn a place in the first team with some big performances – netting seven goals across all competitions.
Castro’s contract at Naturena was set to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season, with his future looking uncertain in recent weeks.
However, Chiefs put speculation to bed when they announced on their social media pages and official website on Friday evening that the big South American has penned a new deal.
‘Kaizer Chiefs and Leonardo Castro have reached an agreement to extend their relationship with a further two years‚ ending on 30 June 2022‚’ the Chiefs statement read.
It quoted Castro as saying: ‘Thank you so much. I am very happy with the chairman‚ Kaizer Motaung‚ and club.
‘I am also grateful to continue to wear the gold and black. This is sensitive for me because I have not won a trophy yet with the team. And to leave without a gold medal would be a defeat for me.
‘I wish to win something. And I think with the squad we have at the moment‚ we are capable of doing well.
‘My family is excited about this development. We are happy to remain in South Africa.’
