Kaizer Chiefs held on to a point at the FNB Stadium as visitors Cape Town City moved top to the top of the table following a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.
The home side opened the scoring in the third minute when Michell Katsvairo deflected George Maluleka’s long range effort on goal and past a helpless Shu-Aib Walters. Walters then kept his side in it denying Chirambadare from close range.
Shortly before the half hour mark disaster struck for Steve Komphela when Sibusiso Khumalo’s reckless challenge on Mkhize was punished with a straight red card by referee Victor Moses.
The next chance fell to Chiefs midfielder George Lebese but he pulled his effort wide as the team’s headed for the break.
The visitors were denied a clear goal in the first minute of time added on in the half when Khune failed to clear Masina’s header but the linesman failed when he was needed most.
Australian Matt Sim, on his way back to full fitness following an injury niggle, was introduced from the bench and beat Itumeleng Khune with a deflected shot in the 53rd minute for a second time in as many encounters between the teams to add to Komphela’s problems.
The goal and the extra man advantage helped City push for a second goal but despite their best efforts failed time and time again to secure the goal and a valuable win on the road.
In the final 10 minutes, Judas Moseamedi, Sim, Aubrey Ngoma and captain Lebogang Manyama all failed to beat Brilliant Khuzwayo, who stood in as Khune made way with an injury.
The match took a turn for the bizarre when the referee sent a ball boy to the stands after he forced a stoppage in play when he was too eager to get the ball in play.
The draw stretches Chiefs winless run to six games while the visitors leave with a point, a place at the top of the table and an unbeaten run which sits at eight games.
