Chippa v Chiefs

Abel Mabaso’s fifth minute strike gave Chippa United a 1-0 victory against Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership encounter on Wednesday night, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

The home side started proceedings the brighter of the two teams and took the lead in the fifth minute when Mark Mark Mayambela’s low ball in from the right was met by Abel Mabaso, with his shot beating Itumeleng Khune.

The Chilli Boys could have extended their lead a few minutes later, but Zitha Macheke was adjudged to have been in an offsidew position despite replays suggesting otherwise.

It continued to be one-way traffic as Teboho Moloi’s outfit continurf their onslaught on Khune’s goal. The Bafana Bafans shot-stopper made a fine save to keep out Moeketsi Sekola’s header in the 25th minute.

Chiefs came close to levelling matters in the 32nd minute when Hendrick Ekstein did well to hold off James Okwuosa, but his resultant shot crashed against the post.

Chippa were to be denied by the referee’s whistle again, as Paseka Mako’s goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

The second half continued in similar vein to that of the first with Chippa dominating, but proving wasteful in their efforts to extend their lead.

The visitors opted for the first substitution of the game when Gustavo Paez was brought on to replace Ekstein in the 54th minute.

Chiefs upped their efforts at getting an equaliser, but became desperate with long-range efforts as the home side began to defend deeper in their own half.

Katlego Mashego thought he wrapped up the tie in the 80th minute when he did well to get onto the end of Kurt Lentjies’ cross, but the strikes header was cleared off the line by Teenage Hadebe.

In the end, Chippa held onto their one-goal lead to run out 1-0 victors.
