Cape Town City hopes to lure Bafana Bafana star Lebogang Manyama back to the club, according to the club’s chairman John Comitis.

Manyama underwent the transition from Mpumalanga Black Aces to Cape Town City back in 2016. The forward went on to shine for the Citizens in their debut Absa Premiership campaign as he scored an impressive 14 goals while also notching up six assists across all competitions in the 2016/17 season.

This impressive showing saw Manyama pick up the Golden Boot, Players’ Player of the Season and the Player of the Season awards.

This saw him catch the eye of European suitors as the former SuperSport United man joined Turkish side Konyaspor in 2017.

Things, however, didn’t go according to plan for the 27-year-old as he made just 10 appearances across all competitions last season and subsequently had his contract mutually terminated.

Manyama is now a free agent and is currently in South Africa, training on his own and searching for a new club.

Comitis revealed to Independent Media that the Cape-based club is interested in bringing the player ‘home’.

‘I’ve had a chat with Lebo and he knows where his home is. At this stage, he is not sure [where he wants to go]. We will find out next week what he is thinking. Everyone would love to have a player of his quality and we are no different,’ Comitis said.

City will reportedly face stiff competition for his signature, as both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns are also interested in his services. Downs, in particular, are known admirers of Manyama as they tried to sign him before his European move.

‘I’ve known Lebo since he was 21. I worked with him when he was still young at Ajax. As I said we had a chat and I offered him some sort of advice and we will hear from him in a week,’ Comitis added.

‘Apart from Lebo, it looks like we are done in the market,’ Comitis concluded.

The Manyama transfer saga looks to be one which could go down to the wire with all three clubs having a realistic chance of securing his signature.
