Cape Town City ease past AmaZulu

Goals by Taariq Fielies, Siphelele Mthembu and Thabo Nodada saw Cape Town City end a seven-game winless streak in the Absa Premiership to secure a 3-0 victory against AmaZulu, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

The Citizens went into the clash on the back of a seven-game winless streak in the league with their last victory coming on matchday one when they eased past SuperSport United.

Benni McCarthy’s side will be keen to avenge their Telkom Knockout last-16 defeat (their most recent clash) at the hands of the same of the Usuthu outfit.

The home side started the brighter of the two teams and were ahead as early as the first minute when defender Taariq Fielies reacted quickest in the area to swoop home Ayanda Patosi’s freekick.

Usuthu gradually settled into the clash and looked dangerous with their one-two’s. They came close to equalising matters in the tenth minute but Emiliano Tade’s header went over the bar.

AmaZulu dominated possession stakes, but it was City, who looked the more likely to score and came agonisingly close to doing so in the 20th minute but goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha made amends for his earlier mistake, making a fine double save to deny Patosi and Surprise Ralani.

City doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Siphelele Mthembu latched onto Ralani’s ball into the area, before sweeping home.

The visitors did everything in their power to claw their way back into the game, however a mixture of poor decision-making, wastefulness and resolute defending from McCarthy’s side ensured that City kept a clean sheet.

Nodada added his name onto the scoresheet in the 74th minute to wrap up a resounding 3-0 victory for City.
