Goals by Ayanda Patosi and Siphelele Mthembu saw Cape Town City run out 2-1 victors against Polokwane City in their Absa Premiership clash on Tuesday, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

Benni McCarthy’s side went into the clash on the back of a 3-1 victory against Black Leopards, with one change being made to the lineup as Teko Modise was brought in for Allan Katterega.

The clash got off to a lively start with the visitors displaying a great tempo in the opening exchanges. It was the home side who were presented with the first chance of the game, but Vusimuzi Mngomezulu failed to direct his effort goalbound.

City broke the deadlock in fine style in the 8th minute when a well-worked move saw Surprise Ralani’s defence-splitting ball find Thabo Nodada in the area, who turned provider for Ayanda Patosi to net his fourth goal of the campaign.

The Citizens took their foot off the pedal slightly, allowing Rise and Shine to enjoy a few rare attacking opportunities. However, they proved wasteful in the final third with the decision-making left to be desired.

Peter Leeuwenburgh produced the save of the match in the 40th minute when he kept out a goalbound rocket from Mngomezulu.

The home side emerged out of the starting blocks as the more dominant team in the second half as they came close to levelling matters through a long-range effort by Ramagalela, which was kept out by Leeuwenburgh.

Siphelele Mthembu doubled his side’s lead in the 58th minute when he reacted quickest to net from Nodada’s rebound.

Things went from bad to worse for City when captain Maluleke was given a second yellow card for a foul on Mkhize, forcing his side to play with a man short for the remainder of the game.

Gift Links made his substitution for Ralani in the second stanza, while Craig Martin and Nana Akosah-Bempah came on for Patosi and Mthembu.

Rise and Shine opted for an all-out attack in a bid to muster a way back into the clash. Their approach proved fruitful to an extent as Mohammed Anas scored from the penalty spot.

Despite a nervy end, City managed to hold on to their lead to run out 2-1 victors.
