Cape Town City streched their winless run in the Absa Premiership to seven games after playing to a 0-0 against Maritzburg United on Friday evening, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The Citizens came into this clash having last secured a win on the opening day of the Absa Premiership against SuperSport United, while Maritzburg played to a goalless draw against AmaZulu in their previous encounter.
City remain in 14th place on the league standings with seven points while the Team of Choice are one place above them in 13th position with the same amount of points.
The game got off to a slow start with both side’s trying to find their rhythm in the opening exchanges of the match.
Gift Links had the first opportunity of the game in the 12th minute, but the City attack was unable to direct his curling free-kick towards the target.
The home side had a chance if their own midway through the half when Yannick Zakri unleashed a shot at goal, but City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh did well to prevent his effort from finding the back of the net.
The Team of Choice grew into the game as the match went on and started seeing more possession of the ball.
The Citizens had a chance to break the deadlock just before the break, but Maritzburg shot-stopper did well to deny Thabo Nodada.
The game went into the half time interval with the scoreline locked at 0-0.
Maritzburg captain Siyanda Xulu nearly opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, but his header sailed wide of the target.
Both side’s picked up the tempo with in the closing 20 minutes of the game as they went in search of the winning goal.
City coach Benni McCarthy opted to make a double change when he introduced Surprise Ralani and Craig Martin to freshen things up in attack.
Shortly after coming on, Ralani came close to claiming the winner with 10 minutes to play, but the winger blazed his shot into the side netting.
However, neither side were about to score thw winning goal as both side’s shared the spoils at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
