The game got off to a lively start with both sides trying to find their stride in the opening exchanges of the match.
Evans Rusike had a chance to hand United the lead after 12 minutes, but Peter Leeuwenburg made a good save to deny the striker.
Riyaad Norodien almost handed City the lead in the 20th minute after he unleashed an effort at goal, but Rowen Williams claimed the ball with ease.
City dominated possession after the half-hour mark, but failed to break through the United defence.
The game went into the half-time interval with the scoreline locked at 0-0.
The home side came out guns blazing in the second half and opened the scoring with a stunning volley from Putsche to make it 1-0.
City then doubled their lead five minutes later when Craig Martin, who celebrates his birthday today, found the net with his strike, 2-0.
Taariq Fielies had a chance to extend City’s lead even further but the defender guided his header wide of the target.
Aubrey Modiba had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 78th minute, but his effort sailed high and wide of the target.
Substitute Fagrie Lakay had a chance of his own a few minutes later, but the midfielder was unable to find the back of the net with his effort.
However, City held on to their two-goal lead over SuperSport until the final whistle to claim all three points in their PSL opener at Cape Town Stadium.
