Cape Town City defender Keanu Cupido admits to being starstruck at the realisation that he would share a dressing room with former legends Benni McCarthy and Teko Modise.

The former Bidvest Wits starlet was snapped up by the Citizens on a two-year deal from French outfit AC Ajaccio and says that he has learned a lot from former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Modise.

The former South African youth international has hit the ground running with the MTN8 finalists, making his debut in City’s 2-1 loss against Baroka, before helping his side book their spot in the MTN8 semi-finals with the solitary goal in the victory against Maritzburg United.

‘I was in awe and couldn’t believe it, that I shared a training session with coach Benni and Teko, and I had to pinch myself,’ he told Kickoff.

‘They are big names in South African football, you know. Especially Teko has taught me a lot thus far during our training sessions. He helped me with my positioning on the field and how to move into space. I’m very grateful and honoured.

‘Coach Benni also knows exactly what he wants from a young player and this makes things so much easier for me as a young player. I mean who better to teach a defender on how to stop attackers than Bafana Bafana’s all-time top scorer?’ he added.

Cupido, who is capped at junior national team level for Amajimbos (U17) and Amajita (U20), says that the transition to life with the Mother City outfit has been great thus far.

‘I’m more confident since I arrived here on and off the field and it’s also down to all my teammates as well.

‘But it will require much more effort than just words and desires from my side. I’m willing to work my socks off my for club as the PSL is a tough league and the standard is also very high. This is exactly why I know I’m at the right club with people that have a wealth of soccer knowledge and experience,’ he concluded.

City resume their league campaign with a mouth-watering fixture against Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town City on Saturday.
