Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids says he is not thinking about the possibility of his side qualifying for one of the continental tournaments next season.

The Absa Premiership Champions and runners-up will receive a chance to compete in the Caf Champions League. While the team’s that finish third or win the Nedbank Cup will qualify for the second-tier competition, the Caf Confederations Cup.

David’s men look to have a strong chance of qualifying for the Confed Cup whether it be by finishing third or winning the Nedbank Cup. They are currently third with just four league games left and they will come up against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals on 22 April.

Speaking about the possibility, Davids said, ‘Yes, third position and winning the cup, one of the two takes you there.’

‘But we have a young squad. We have young players and all we have to do is to focus on the next match and not start thinking too far ahead. You can lose your focus and crumble.’

‘We got a very thin squad and we’ve used the least number of players in the league so far, but we need to manage them to be able to come to this tough week coming.’

The downside of challenging on the continent with a small squad is there for all to see. You just have to look at Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United’s league campaigns, both have struggled to balance the competitions and their league form has suffered for it.

When asked if United would welcome the opportunity to compete in Africa, Davids evaded the question responding, ‘Let’s not even go there. We can only see if it happens.”

The Team of Choice will next face Baroka on Sunday in the Absa Premiership, with kickoff at 3pm.
