Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tashreeq Matthews has reflected on his side’s 1-0 victory over TP Mazembe in the Caf Champions League ahead of their clash against TS Galaxy in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday.
The Brazilians snatched the victory from Mazembe when Peter Shalulile slotted home a penalty after Lucas Ribeiro Costa was fouled in the area.
As a result, Sundowns finished top of Group A with 13 points from six matches, while Mazembe finished second in the group with 10 points from six games.
Matthew, who came on as a substitute for Marcelo Allende in the 76th minute to play the final 12 minutes of the game, admits he had to adapt quickly to the game but was delighted that his side could grind out a positive result.
“We expected some physical content, aggressiveness from them, they are taller, much taller than us so a bit long ball playing but we dealt with them,” Matthew told Sundowns TV.
“We kind of almost forced them to play it long but they played it too long so we could just intercept it and play from the back.
“I came in and it had a high intensity, I had to adapt quickly but for me the result was important, the game was nice and we won.
The Tshwane giant will now travel to the Mbombela Stadium when they take on TS Galaxy in their next DStv Premiership encounter on Wednesday evening.
