Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena admits he took “a lot of risks” during their victory over the University of Pretoria in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
Sundowns advanced to the semi-finals of the competition following their 4-3 win in a penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1 after Delano Abrahams cancelled out Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s opener at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.
The Brazilians were now scheduled to face an in-form. Stellenbosch FC side when the two sides face off in the last four of the competition for a place in the final.
Mokwena has since opened up about how difficult AmaTuks were and how it was difficult to control the game against the Pretoria-based outfit.
“It’s so difficult, it’s a cup game number one, so difficult to control and then it’s a team that play so open, so stretched, the long balls stretch you also but okay good, the most important thing is that we’re in the semi-finals, one stage better than last season, so very proud of the players,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV after the game.
“We took a lot of risks even with our subs. We took off (Aubrey) Modiba, we took off Grant (Kekana) also, we put on a lot of offensive players, so we went for it.
“No one can say we didn’t go for it and we tried and I’m just very proud of the players, happy for the supporters and the football club.”
