Orlando Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa says they will use their experience playing in Spain during preseason as a springboard to get their 2023-24 season off to a positive start.
The 26-year-old has been at Pirates for the past seven years but has spent most of his time on loan at Richards Bay and Chippa United.
The KwaZulu-Natal-born defender spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Chippa before being recalled by head coach Jose Riveiro for the 2022-23 season.
Mthethwa struggled to cement his place in the Buccaneers squad and only managed to feature 12 times but was ever-present in their Nedbank Cup squad, who went on to win the competition.
He also played his part in helping the Soweto giants finish in second place in the DStv Premiership and book their place in next year’s Caf Champions League.
Mthethwa is looking forward to having the opportunity to test himself against teams from “different countries” and “different continents” during the preseason.
“I think it’s a really good thing for us,” Mthethwa told the Pirates media. “A really good opportunity to face other teams that plays on a certain level to see if we’re on their level or maybe above them or maybe there is something we can learn from them.
“Obviously they playing from other countries and other continents there is always going to be a difference and that is what we want coming from here gaining that experience.
“A little bit experience something different so that when we come back from camp we go there with something different and something that will help us to be on top and win the cups there in South Africa.”
