Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala says he is humbled after walking away with the Man of the Match award against Cape Town Spurs.
The Brazilians stretched their unbeaten run in the DStv Premiership following their 1-0 win over the Urban Warriors at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The win saw Sundowns go 13-points clear at the summit of the league standings with 52 points after 20 games, while Spurs remain at the foot of the table with 12 points from 23 matches.
Mvala, who helped his side keep a clean sheet, felt like his side had a better first-half than second-half as he felt they made too many mistakes in the second stanza, which could have cost Sundowns the game.
“Our game-plan worked very well in the first-half because we knew they were going to play the balls behind, they not going to try and build from the back,” Mvala told Sundowns TV.
“I think it went very very well and we had good passes from the back. I think second-half towards the end of the game that’s where we lost it a bit, we started to give the balls away.
“I’m happy we decided to stay together, fight for one another and put the team first, keep the clean sheet and all three points which was very important for us.”
Sundowns will now turn their attention to their upcoming Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash against the University of Pretoria at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday, with kick-off set for 7pm.
“It’s very difficult because now you are fight teams that are fighting for their lives in the Premier League. Teams that are fighting to stay in the league like Cape Town Spurs they are fighting relegation,” he added.
“Obviously, they going to give their all but its a story of everyone wants to be us. What’s important for us is to keep those clean sheets, keep listening to the coach and put the team first.
“There are guys that Lebo (Lebohang Maboe), Neo Maema, Grant Kekana also but I was the chosen one today. It really humbled me to get this accolade, it means a lot to me and my teammates.
“I would like to thank the doctors and physical trainers for making sure we come back very strong and we don’t have difficulties when we play the game.”
