Mamelodi Sundowns secured their sixth consecutive victory in the DStv Premiership following their 2-0 win over Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians got off to the perfect start when they were awarded a penalty after Marcelo Allende was brought down in the box. Lucas Ribeiro stepped up to fire the ball into the back of the net.

Ribeiro nearly turned provider in the 23rd minute when he squared a ball to Neo Maema but he was tackled before he could tap the ball into the net.

Sundowns had another chance to double their lead in the 34th minute when Rivaldo Coetzee latched on to Marcelo’s free-kick into the back but the Polokwane keeper made a good save to deny him a scoring opportunity.

The defending champions went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead over Rise and Shine.

Sundowns started the second half the same way in which they did the first with an early goal when Ribeiro slotted the ball home to complete his brace.

Junior Mendieta should have added a third goal in the 54th minute after his glancing her bounced just wide of the upright.

Rulani Mokwena made his first substitution a minute later when Mendieta was taken off and replaced by Lesiba Nku before introducing Bathusi Aubaas and Mosa Lebusa in place of Kekana and Mokoena in the 63rd minute.

Allende had a chance to make it 3-0 in the 71st minute but his curling free-kick sailed just over the bar.

The Brazilians pressed forward in search of a third goal after 80 minutes but Maema saw his effort flash across the face of goal.

Sundowns were reduced to 10 men six minutes later when Lebohang Maboe received his marching order after a foul in the midfield.

The visitors held on to their lead until the final whistle to claim another win and walk away from maximum points away from home.
