Mamelodi Sundowns cruise to a comfortable 3-0 victory in a top-versus-bottom clash against Cape Town Spurs at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.
WATCH: Sundowns’ Mbule stunner against Spurs
With several regulars rested for Sundowns, midfielder Mbule was given a rare start. On minute 23, he unleashed a powerful shot that left custodian Neil Boshoff with no chance in Pretoria.
Six minutes later, after a goalmouth scramble after a corner, Grant Kekana scored, forcing Boshoff to scoop the ball out of the net once more.
In the last minute of regulation time, Peter Shalulile, an unmarked Namibian, side-footed a cross into the net at the far post to give Sundowns the final goal.
Seeking their seventh straight league title, Sundowns had an easy time dominating rivals who could not muster even one goal attempt.
Despite playing three fewer games than second-place Cape Town City, Sundowns have won a record 11 straight games since the start of the season. They currently hold an eight-point lead over the Cape.
With 13 losses in 14 games under three different coaches since winning promotion, the future looks bleak for bottom club Spurs.
“This is an amazing group of players, who perform consistently well despite having a coach who is never satisfied, who pushes them all the time,” said Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena.
Ernst Middendorp, the veteran German coach of Spurs who has held spells at multiple Premiership clubs, lost for the third time in a row since taking the helm, with two of those losses coming by three goals.
“I was hoping for improvements in physicality and tactical awareness, but did not see them. We lost the midfield battle and that spells disaster against Sundowns.”
In the other midweek game, AmaZulu defeated Sekhukhune United 1-0 at home, moving them up four spots to 10th place. Ivorian Junior Dion scored the game’s winning goal in the 24th minute.
