Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu has opened up about returning from injury and helping the team succeed this season after they were crowned Dstv Premiership champions for the 2022-23 season.

The 30-year-old has had a tough time this season as he missed out on 15 appearances due to an injury-hit season, having only featured 13 times for the Brazilians this campaign.

Zungu made his first appearance for Sundowns when he played the final 12 minutes in their goalless draw against Swallows FC after he was sidelined with a muscle injury.

The Gauteng-born midfielder says he used his time on the sidelines to guide the young players in the squad as he believes representing Sundowns is to have a longer season than any other team in the league.

“Obviously, first of all, my wish is to be injured free and I’m grateful that I got the opportunity against Swallows and obviously I got injured in the Nedbank Cup.

“It’s been a tough few weeks for me but right now I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fit and hopefully whenever the coach gives me a chance to play my duty is to try and help the team as much as I can

“We still have a long way to go and we still have the Caf Champions League, the Nedbank Cup and we still want to win games in the league.

“For me it’s just to focus on that and get the chance I have to kill it.

“Even when I’ve been injured I try my best to help the guys, to help the youngsters to perform because when you play for Sundowns your season is very long and we do need everyone to perform at the highest level and to be switched on mentally all the time.

“We’ve got a lot of quality in the team and anyone can play and make the team when so as I just mention we need everyone to be switched on even me, whenever I get the chance I want to help the team.

“I do help the guys off the pitch and in training. We’ve got a good squad, we’ve got a good camp at Sundowns and as I said whenever we play the team performance really good,” he concluded.
