Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Wedson Nyirenda has emerged as the firm favourite to take over the coaching reigns at Baroka.
The Limpopo-based outfit has been without a full-time coach since the dismissal of Kgoloko Thobejane in March this year after he was released from his contract following protracted suspension.
Nyirenda is currently the head coach of the Zambian national team but could be tempted to make a return to the Premier Soccer League as a coach.
Baroka boss Khurishi Mphahlele has confirmed talks with Nyirenda but stated that he’s one of many they have spoken to over the past few weeks as they search for a new coach.
Baroka chief executive Morgan Mammila confirmed that the club will announce their new head coach in the near future after a deal between the two parties is finalised.
‘We are working very hard with the chairman [Khurishi Mphahlele] behind the scenes to ensure that we have an experienced coach before the start of pre-season‚’ Mammila told the media.
‘An announcement will be made soon and we are pleading with our fans to give us time as we finalise things in this regard.
‘The man we are talking to has won the league championship on the continent‚ he has coached in the Caf Champions League and at national team level.
He added: ‘We are looking at someone with experience because next season we want to be competitive.’
‘Obviously, we have to boost the team for next season and we have an idea of which areas need to be improved.
‘There are players who will be leaving the club and those who will be coming in‚ but we will make announcements at a later stage.’
