With Kjell Jonevret resigning from his post as the head coach of Orlando Pirates, Dylan Appolis takes a look at five possible replacements to fill the void at the club.
The Swedish coach, who spent less than six months at the helm of Pirates, guided the club to their lowest finish in the Absa Premiership since the inception of the PSL after placing 11th in the league.
Milutin Sredojevic:
Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevic is reportedly the front runner to replace Jonevret, having already coached the side from June 2006 to January 2007.
During that time the Serbian led the club to the Caf Champions League semi-final in 2006 and giving late Senzo Meyiwa his debut for the Buccaneers during their 2-1 win over AmaZulu.
Sredojevic has a vast experience coaching the likes of FK Palic, FK Spartak Subotica, Yugoslavia U20, FK Hajduk Kula, Villa SC, Saint-George SA, Orlando Pirates, Young Africans, Saint-George SA, Al-Hilal Omdurman, Rwanda and Uganda. with 13 trophies to his name.
Ruud Krol:
Armed with 28 years of experience coaching 18 teams, Krol was recently a candidate for the South African national team post, however the Dutch coach is now a likely candidate to replace Jonevret.
In the three years with the Buccaneers, he won a total of six trophies including the Absa Premiership title (2011), Nedbank Cup (2011), back-to-back Telkom Knockout Cup and MTN8 trophies in 20110 and 2011 respectively.
Roger De Sa:
Roger De Sa is also seen as someone who could take the job, having previously had success with the Soweto giants when he led them to the 2009-10 edition of the Nedbank Cup, the Carling Black Label Cup in 2012 and 2014, and runners of in the 2013 Caf Champions League.
Shakes Mashaba:
The 66-year-old is someone who could take over the helm at Pirates, having played for the Ghost after leaving Preston Brothers in 1973.
In his latest tenure at Bafana Bafana, overseeing 26 official matches, which included international friendlies, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and Fifa World Cup qualifiers, where he managed 12 wins, 12 draws and just three defeats, while 42 goals were scored and 26 conceded.
Cavin Johnson:
Johnson could also be considered as a strong contender for the post after parting aways with Platinum Stars. He has a great knowledge of the game and is one of many coaches that came under the tutelage of Ted Dumitru.
In his first stint at Dikwena, he guided them to a 2nd-place finish in the Absa premiership. On his return to Stars following his tenure at SuperSport United, he guided the club to a third place finish in the PSL during the 2015-16.
