Bafana Bafana legend Phil Masinga has passed away after a long battle with illness.

The Bafana twitter account announced the news on Sunday morning that the 49-year-old had passed away after a long battle with illness.

‘Sad day for South African football. A loyal servant of the game, on and off the field of play,’ were the words of Safa president Danny Jordaan via the same twitter account.

Masinga, who played in Italy and England before turning out for Mamelodi Sundowns and Jomo Cosmos, was a South African icon.

He earned that status through his 58 appearances for the South African national side, where he went on to lift the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations in that famous victory on home soil.

He was perhaps most loved for his now famous strike against the Republic of the Congo which sent Bafana to the 1998 Fifa World Cup in France.
