It’s been over a decade since the death of Gift Leremi, but the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star’s life will be commemorated in a documentary.
The hour-long documentary titled Whispering Leremis’ Tale To My Child is the story of Leremi’s life which came to a tragic end at age of 22 in 2007 following a car accident.
The story is told through the eyes of his widow Mamello, who revealed that she wanted to tell her own story about Leremi while also telling the story to her daughter, Kelebogile.
‘This is an opportunity to show everyone else who my husband truly was. Above the rest, it is to tell my daughter who her father was instead of getting different information from different people,’ she told Sowetan Live.
‘The death of Gift hit me hard. It wasn’t nice. Two years after his death, my first-born daughter died too. The documentary will tell a story of Gift to our last-born daughter, to Kelebogile.
Leremi’s former teammate Gerald Modabi also makes an appearance in the documentary. The former Pirates man gave his backing to the documentary, which was initially thought to lack the necessary content to do justice to Leremi’s life.
‘I think the documentary covers enough information about his life. I am happy with it,’ he concluded.
Leremi playeprofessionalon football for five years, having played for boyhood club Pirates and then Sundowns. He represented South Africa at U20, U23 and made four caps for Bafana Bafana.
Most football fans can attest to the fact that South Africa lost one of it’s most talented players of it’s generation in Leremi.
