Rise and Shine came into this clash after securing back-to-back wins in their first two league games of the new season against Black Leopards and AmaZulu.
Polokwane current sit in second place in the league standings level, on six points with current log leaders Kaizer Chiefs after two matches played.
Meanwhile, the Students suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by Baroka in their previous league encounter at Bidvest Stadium last weekend.
The Clever Boys currently occupy sixth place on the table with three points, having already played two games in the league.
It was a tightly contested affair in the first half as both sides fought for possession of the ball but neither side creating any clear-cut chances in the final third.
With three minutes remaining in the first half, Wits broke the deadlock when Deon Hotto smashed the ball home from close range.
The Clever Boys came out with intent in the second half as they looked to extend their lead even further.
Rise and Shine opted to bring on a fresh pair of legs when they introduced Charlton Mashumba for Sibusiso Hlubi in the 55th minute before Carl Lark made way for Mxolisi Macuphu five minutes later.
At the other end, Gavin Hunt made a change of his own in the 74th minute when Haashim Domingo came on for Gift Motupa.
Polokwane pressed forward in search of an equaliser in the closing stages of the game, but Wits held on to their lead until the final whistle to claim all three points at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
