The Premier Soccer League has confirmed that Bidvest Wits duo Gavin Hunt and Moeneeb Josephs have been named Coach and Player of the Month for May respectively.

The 52-year-old coach was honoured with the award after steering his side to their maiden Absa Premiership title, with a game to spare.

‘If you’ve got better players, then you’ve got a better chance to win trophies,’ Hunt told the PSL.

‘When we lost that game at Free State Stars and Sundowns drew against Baroka- I think that was the turning point.

‘Next year I won’t make the trip to Bethlehem.

‘I think the team I had at SuperSport United in my second season there was the best I’ve ever coached.’

The Clever Boys clinched the Absa Premiership title last weekend, after securing four wins from six league games during the month of May.

Wits goalkeeper Josephs played a vital role in all six encounters, while, keeping clean sheets in four matches from which they collected maximum points.

‘I was just happy that I could help the team. To play my part towards the Championship,’ Josephs said after being handed the award.

‘We have the hardest-working bunch of players and that’s what worked in our favour. To be honest, I haven’t even thought of retirement. I am still enjoying playing.

‘I think the year I won the second league title with Orlando Pirates was the best team I’ve played in.’

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs veteran midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala bagged the Absa Premiership Goal of the Month award for April.

‘I would like to congratulate Moeneeb, coach Gavin and Bidvest Wits. They were the best team this season,’ Tshabalala said.

‘I am a team player, so I am not too happy about individual awards if the team hasn’t done well.

‘I personally feel that we failed as a collective. This is not tennis or golf, it’s football- a team sport. I think we will need to strengthen the team in order to compete next season.’
