Gordon Igesund feels that Highlands Park were unfortunate to suffer defeat against SuperSport United at the Makhulong Stadium on Saturday.
A solitary strike from SuperSport captain Dean Furman sealed a 1-0 victory for Matsatsantsa and heaped more pressure on the struggling Lions of the North.
Igesund believes that his team could’ve been ahead in the first half, if they had been more clinical in front of goal.
‘I thought in the first half we dominated the game, we had three or four really good chances to score before they had a chance, and then we made one mistake and we got punished for it. They had one chance in the first half and scored and we had four in the first half,’ Igesund said after the game.
The former Bafana Bafana coach praised his side’s performance in the second half and thought that they outplayed their opponents from Pretoria.
‘I thought in the second half as well, we played really, really well. We’re playing outstandingly, we’re putting teams under pressure. I’ve got to have a look at the game but I thought we were the better team again,’ he said.
The Lions of the North coach gave credit to his opponents for seeing out the result, but thinks that his side deserved more out of the match.
‘We’ve got to be a good sport and say well done to SuperSport, they ground out their result, but we were unlucky. Unlucky is not a word I like to use, but the guys worked very hard tonight, they got stuck in, they played, we got behind them, we just missed the chances,’ he added.
The relegation battle is well and truly on for Highlands Park, but Igesund vowed that his team will compete right until the end.
‘We’ll keep boxing on and keep working hard and the team is going to fight for every point,’ Igesund concluded.
Highlands Park face Free State Stars at Goble Park on Sunday afternoon.
Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30.
