Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has insisted that he hasn’t started to calculate possible points totals, with his side still to face Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits twice in the title run-in.

Amakhosi moved seven points clear over the weekend after a massive 1-0 win in the Soweto derby. The result gave Chiefs back control of the title race, moving nine points clear of third-placed Pirates with second-placed Sundowns having one game in hand and sixth-placed Wits, with two games left, who are a massive 14 points behind.

The German coach, though, is not looking to move away from his mantra of one game at a time as the title race is reaching boiling point.

Speaking after his side’s win in the Soweto derby, Middendorp admitted the title race is in their hands but he hasn’t begun counting points just yet.

‘As long as this is the case, and it has been now over the last seven months that it’s in our hands. We started the season with a very clear target – the league is the one, for me the main one,’ said Middendorp.

‘But I’m not sitting and starting to be a mathematician now and doing the science [of calculating the possible outcomes], I could do it [because] I’m a little bit educated, but it doesn’t bring you anything.

‘We prepare for the next game against AmaZulu here at FNB Stadium, and I think the good stuff is that they [title challengers] all play each other – we play Wits twice, Sundowns play Pirates, Wits play Sundowns, etc.

‘It’s all these stuff, and I believe it’s very crucial how you handle the matches against the so-called teams that are not in the chasing pack for the league title, and if you go into their situation – teams like Baroka, AmaZulu, Polokwane City are all fighting for their lives in the league.

‘So, that doesn’t make it easier but probably even more difficult, and there we have to put the same attitude, character and effort into a basket of performance that you want.’
