Bidvest Wits defender Robyn Johannes believes his former coach Benni McCarthy will become like Gavin Hunt and see him winning ‘many titles’ in the future, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

The veteran defender was one of four players to sign a pre-contract with Wits during the January transfer window, which also included Edwin Gyimah, Thobani Mncwango and Denis Weidlich.

Johannes ended his two-year stay with Cape Town City, where he won the Telkom Knockout in his first season with the club while captaining the side to a fifth place finish in the Absa Premiership standings the following season.

After winning their maiden PSL title during the 2016-17 campaign, Wits suffered something of a post-title decline as they finished the following season in 13th spot on the table.

Wits went from having the second-best defensive record to the third-worst defensive record, which prompted Gavin Hunt to acquire the services of the experienced defender.

When TFGSoccerClub asked Johannes to compare McCarthy to Hunt, he said: ‘You can’t really compare them, coach Gavin [Hunt] has been around for ages and has won many titles while coach Benni [McCarthy] just started.

‘Benni will eventually end up like Gavin and win many titles.

‘I’ve got huge respect for the both of them.’

The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender believes young players lack ‘humility’, but he believes Percy Tau is an exception to the rule following his impressive 2017-18 campaign with Sundowns which saw him claim both the Footballer of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season, and sharing the Absa Premiership top scorer award with Polokwane City’s Rodney Ramagalela.

‘One thing that most of the young players lack is ‘humility’. I think humility is everything,’ he added.

‘But Percy Tau has all of that, the world at his feet and his so humble. I love and respect that for that.
