Cavin Johnson believes his Platinum Stars team were unfortunate not to pick up any points after they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns last night.

Dikwena conceded an early goal when Themba Zwane found the back of the net for the visitors. The Rustenburg-based outfit equalised early in the 2nd half through a Sphamandla Mlilo header, but Khama Billiat’s winner ensured that the home side would leave the Royal Bafokeng Stadium empty-handed.

Despite the loss, the former SuperSport United coach was happy with the performance of his team and thinks they were unlucky not to come away with something from the game.

‘I think we should have at least walked away with a point, but it wasn’t to be tonight. We are proud of the boys,’ Johnson said after the game.

Johnson believes that his players didn’t put in enough effort for the first 45 minutes of the game against the defending PSL champions.

‘In the first half the mistakes we made were little technical mistakes, because we were just not pushing themselves in the right way, and sometimes it’s just the personality of the player that you need to bring out,’ he added.

But in the second stanza, the coach believes that Stars put up a much better showing against the current champions of Africa.

‘In the second half they performed much better. I thought we deserved a little bit more and you mustn’t forget we were playing against African champions, and I thought we gave them a run for their money tonight,’ Johnson said.

‘Although in saying that, I think the bottom line is that we should have gone away with a point as well.’

For their next encounter, Stars will travel to the Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday to face Bloemfontein Celtic.

Kick-off has been scheduled for 15:30.
