Orlando Pirates coach Kjell Jonevret insists their 2-0 victory over nine-man Maritzburg United was an important result after claiming their first league win in 12  games.

The Buccaneers ended their 12-match winless run in the Absa Premiership through goals by Ayanda Gcaba and Dove Wome, who scored in either half at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Team of Choice finished the match with nine men after Brian Onyango and Deolin Mekoa were sent off for their second bookable offences respectively.

The 54-year-old admits that he was delighted with the result ,but felt his side could’ve added to their goal tally after Maritzburg finished the match with nine men.

‘Maybe [for the fans] it was a fantastic game to watch, but for us, it was very important to win the game, and it was also a clean sheet.’ Jonevret told SuperSport after the game.

‘In the end, I don’t know what to say. We had possibilities to score more goals with two red cards, but at the same time I’m not going to be angry about that because the important thing was to win the game.’

The Swedish coach says he was pleased with his tactical decisions on the day after he introduced Dove Wome, who scored a late goal and sealed the victory for the Buccaneers.

‘I thought you could see that there were a few players who looked a bit tired but we played two, three days ago [in the Nedbank Cup], but fresh legs [Dove Wome’s introduction] won the game,’ he added.

‘[Mpho] Makola has played good for us now but he also got tired after a while so, I couldn’t change everyone, I just wanted to have a few fresh legs [on the field].’

Orlando Pirates will be hoping to continue their winning ways when they take on Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership on Saturday.

The match at the Makhulong Stadium kicks off at 20:15.
