Dr Irvin Khoza, PSL Chairman

PSL Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza revealed on Thursday that the Multichoice Diski Challenge will be expanded to include a second round of fixtures.

The PSL’s reserve league will be entering its sixth edition since it began in August 2014, but the league have looked to make a number of changes this time round to allow for young players to be provided with the platform to grow.

In previous seasons each of the sixteen Absa Premiership clubs would battle it out in one round of fixtures, 15 games, for the title of MDC Champions. From next season though a second round will be introduced taking the number of fixtures to 30 for each team in a ‘home’ and ‘away’ format.

The MDC has helped grow the careers of a number of stars currently in the PSL and Khoza insisted during the announcement that the move to expand is focused on helping the youth.

‘I’ve understood that nothing beats a competitive environment, which will give an opportunity especially to the youth aged 12-21,’ said Khoza.

‘We’ve discovered that development requires visibility, and the Multichoice Diski Challenge is no exception.

‘We know now that the PSL is content generators. In a shrinking media space, if the content is not appealing, we are good for nothing. We want to be top of mind.

‘I want to announce that Multichoice has agreed that as from the August 9, the MDC will now be played first and second round. It will start on 9-10 August with a big festival and finish around March-April.

‘The Diski Shiled will then follow and end around July.’
