Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter says the DStv Premiership title race is still on despite Mamelodi Sundowns already building a healthy lead at the top.
The Brazilians have dominated South African football in recent history, winning the last four league titles in a row. They now look set to clinch a fifth consecutive title having started the season by picking up 25 points after just nine matches, thanks to eight wins and a draw, with the team yet to even concede a goal.
Despite Downs’ dominance, Baxter believes the title race is still on and that Sundowns won’t be taking the race lightly.
“Not at all, not at all. If you put that to them now, they’d probably laugh at you. We have to knock them off their perch,” Stuart Baxter insisted.
“I think what we find in the league is that even though new teams, let’s say new names appear [in the title race] it doesn’t mean that’s a small team. We’re a new team.
“There are still some other good teams who’re competitive, hence it won’t be easy to say they [Sundowns] are already gone with it.”
Chiefs, however, would need a major turnaround in order to catch the defending champs as they currently sit sixth, a full 10 points behind Sundowns, who have played one match fewer than the rest of the league.
