Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela was disappointed in his side’s failure to collect maximum points against Ajax Cape Town, following their draw at the Athlone Stadium.
The Urban Warriors went 1-0 up when Nathan Paulse headed in a Thabo Mosadi cross in the 59th minute but Chiefs would eventually get their equalising goal in the 79th minute when Daniel Cardoso headed in from a set-piece. The scores remained 1-1, leaving both sides to settle for a point.
The Chiefs mentor rued his side’s missed chances but also complimented the Urban Warriors for giving his team a stern test.
‘The only regret we have is not picking up the three points. We played well and should have scored in the first half. However, give credit to Ajax, they gave us a good match,’ Komphela said after the match.
The former Bafana Bafana coach was nonetheless pleased with the intent his side showed going forward.
‘There were more positives than negatives to draw from this game – the positive, attacking play, the set-pieces and playing for a win,’ he added.
Komphela lamented his team’s defensive frailties but maintains that the ultimate disappointment was not getting the victory.
‘We failed to deal with their counter-attacks and with their striker Nathan Paulse, who has this habit of drifting to the far post. However, the biggest negative was not being able to win this match,’ the Amakhosi boss said.
The result against Ajax saw the Glamour Boys drop down to third position but the Chiefs coach is still optimistic about his side’s title chances if they manage to win all their upcoming games.
‘We have to win our remaining matches.Anything is possible at this stage. We must just keep applying pressure on the leaders, as they will face challenges too.’ Komphela concluded.
The Glamour Boys will next face Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, in the much anticipated Soweto Derby.
Kick-off is set for 15:30.
