In a bid to put an end to their trophyless stint, Steve Komphela has promised that Kaizer Chiefs will start playing attacking football.

The former Maritzburg United mentor came under scrutiny for his apparent five-man defence following their 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits.

With Komphela not choosing to field new signings Siphelele Ntshangase and Leonardo Castro in the starting-berth, fans of the Soweto giants have become irate with their defensive displays in games.

‘We have to attack, my man. If we want to win the championship, we have to attack and score goals – that’s all,’ he said in post-match comments after the draw against Wits.

‘You’re always tempted [to play your new signings]. And you’re saying, if you start with Castro, do you put [Ryan] Moon outside?

‘He scored [again]. If you start Ntshangase, maybe [leave] ‘Shabba’ [Siphiwe Tshabalala] out? That’s another dynamic.

‘Do you then go with two numbers 10s, where you play Ntshangase and Shabba and sacrifice a striker? That’s another thing.

‘It depends on the game itself, but their contribution is quite clear. Their fitness is there, and you can see their contribution by how they exert. They can even play more minutes compared to when they arrived,’ he concluded.

Chiefs’ next assignment sees them face Golden Arrows on Sunday afternoon in a Nedbank Cup clash at the FNB Stadium with kickoff set for 15:30.
