The Premier Soccer League has named Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho the player of the month for August/September 2016.
Despite being a defender, Gordinho has stepped up his performance this season and helped Amakhosi’s cause with a number of well-taken goals. With Chiefs facing a scoring crisis, it is Gordinho who currently has the tag of joint top scorer with three goals alongside midfielder George Lebese.
‘We have good set piece takers in the team and that increases the opportunity for me to score,’ Gordinho said at the awards.
‘I am very happy about renewing my contract with the club.
‘With regards to the national team, I think I am ready but that’s entirely up to the coaches to decide.’
Joining Gordinho on the stage was Clinton Larsen, who claimed the coach of the month award. The 45-year-old coach’s side have been impressive this season, with Larsen guiding them to sixth place heading into the second half of the season.
Larsen is hoping their January signings can help strengthen the squad as they aim for a top-eight finish in the Absa Premiership.
‘We have gone out to reinforce. We have signed Knox Mutizwa and Chiukepu Msowoya. We have also brought in Nkosinathi Mthiyane from Pirates. I think he will be a big asset to the club,’ said Larsen.
‘I think if we can improve our goal scoring, then we can definitely get a top eight spot. At this stage of my career, I think I should not be a candidate for national team coaching duties.
‘I think there are other coaches like Gavin Hunt who are experienced and have not yet coached the national team.’]
The PSL resumes on Tuesday following the lengthy Afcon 2017-enforced break.
