Cape Town City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh revealed that when his contract ended with Ajax Amsterdam, he asked his agent to explore a move to Cape Town.
The 24-year-old keeper joined the Citizens on a three-year deal on a free transfer in the off-season after leaving the Dutch giants.
Leeuwenburgh came through the ranks at Ajax, spending 10 years with the club before opting for a new challenge in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.
The shot-stopper has already made an impact at the club, playing a starring role in the penalty shootout victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final, and speaking to the LA Dosage, Leeuwenburgh revealed the role his girlfriend played in the move to City.
‘Me and my girlfriend visited Cape Town two years ago for a vacation. Her family has been connected to Cape Town for many years and she’s been here already a few times in her life.
‘So when we were here together for the first time, she showed me all the cool places and I also fell in love with the city and country.
‘So when my contract with Ajax ended, I said to my agent that playing for and living in Cape Town would be an amazing opportunity. We had contact with John Comitis and four days later, I arrived in South Africa,’ concluded the keeper.
