Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe believes that he could be in contention to be named this seasons Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season.

The 24-year-old made the move to Chloorkop from Maritzburg United at the beginning of the campaign, and many questioned whether the youngster would get the necessary game time to continue his development.

Maboe has proved all the doubters wrong, however, as he has forced his way into the team, becoming one of Pitso Mosimane’s regulars.

The forward has played in a variety of positions and roles this season, bagging eight goals and five assists in 22 Absa Premiership matches, while he is also Downs’ top scorer in all competitions.

This sort of form has certainly put Maboe in contention for the top individual award, and he pronounced during a media at Chloorkop on Thursday that he sees him self as a candidate.

‘Yes I would, I mean I’ve been doing well and it’s not up to me to judge that, but all I can say is that I have been doing well for the team.

‘I’d say I still have a lot to do and a lot more to offer. I still need to be more clinical in front of goals and take the right decisions at the right time. I feel like I’ve done well in my first season here.’

Maboe and his Sundowns teammates have other things to focus on, though, as they are set to host eight-time African champions Al Ahly in the Caf Champions League at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off at 3pm.
