A late goal from Kudakwashe Mahachi helped Golden Arrows secure a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The home side came out with more intent early on and should’ve taken the lead after seven minutes, but Knox Mutizwa failed to beat Reyaad Pieterse in a one-on-one situation.
Kudakwashe Mahachi nearly handed Arrows the lead after 31 minutes when the forward pressured Pieterse into making a mistake, but the Arrows’ man was unable to capitalise on the error to put his side ahead.
United had a chance of their own five minutes before the interval as Teboho Mokoena unleashed a strike from outside the box, but Nkosingiphile Gumede made a great save to keep the scoreline goalless heading into the half-time break.
Pieterse came to his side’s rescue at the beginning of the second half when he produced a fine save to deny Siphelele Magubane thunderous effort from a distance.
Thabo Mnyamane should’ve put SuperSport in the lead the 60th minute after latching on to a brilliant cross from Thuso Phala, but the forward failed to direct his effort towards the target as he steered his effort wide of the target.
However, Arrows eventually broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when the United shot-stopper steered Danny Venter’s striker into the path of Mahachi, who made no mistake to find the back of the net from close range.
United pressed forward in search of an equalising goal in the closing stages of the match but were unable to break down Arrows’ defence as they held on to their one-goal lead until the final whistle to secure all three points.
