With the PSL disciplinary committee starting to deal with matters across the league, it is believed that Cape Town City midfielder Mpho Makola could face a ban from anywhere between four games to six months if found guilty by the PSL of manhandling and pushing referee Abongile Tom.

The incident took place during City’s heated Telkom Knockout last-16 encounter with Kaizer Chiefs.

The former Pirates star reacted angrily and pushed the referee after he had awarded Amakhosi a penalty, but he remained on the field with the official only brandishing a yellow card.

The matter is believed to still be under investigation by the DC, with the league’s rule book stating that referee should have given Makola a red card after he pushed him, and the player should be charged by the League.

If Makola is found guilty of unsporting conduct he would receive a ban of at least four matches, while if he is found guilty of assaulting a match official – a far more serious charge – he could face a lengthy ban of at least six months.

It is expected that the league will reveal a decision in the coming weeks, with Makola and his coach Benni McCarthy hoping for the best possible outcome.
