Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka believes the current squad at Naturena has the same team spirit and fight as the 2014-15 Chiefs side, which lifted their last piece of silverware in the Absa Premiership.

Chiefs have endured a lengthy trophy drought in recent years, having last won silverware in the 2014-15 season, when Maluleka was part of their league triumph under Stuart Baxter.

Amakhosi had the chance to take a step closer to ending their dry spell when they faced Maritzburg United in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals, but they failed to produce the goods as the Team of Choice ran out 2-1 winners.

Not all is lost after the loss as Ernst Middendorp’s men still enjoy a healthy lead in the league and will be looking to continue their winning momentum when they face Stellenbosch FC in the league on Wednesday night.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 30-year-old revealed that he sees similarities between the current crop and the ’14-15 side, and he believes they can maintain their winning momentum in the league.

‘There is a wonderful team spirit among the guys and a lot of fight. Those are two elements that come to mind when I look at 2014-15. We have more than what it takes to be successful. We have the players and the talent.

‘It’s still early days but our remaining three league games of the year will be very important for us. We need to stick together and win as many points as possible,’ he emphasised.

If Chiefs manage to claim the three points against their newly promoted opponents, it will be the first time they have managed to win seven league games in a row since 2014-15 season. Maluleka, though, is confident that they will get the job done.
