Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka admits they didn’t play their best football against Cape Town City, despite scoring three goals to win the match.

Amakhosi secured their second consecutive win in the Absa Premiership with a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Citizens at the FNB Stadium on Sunday.

The Glamour Boys have now extended their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership table to nine points, courtesy of goals from Leonardo Castro, Samir Nurkovic and Eric Mathoho.

‘I think we fought very hard today, it was a little bit slow and lethargic in the first half but the coach got on our backs at half time and we had to lift it up a bit in the second half and this is what we did,’ Maluleka told SuperSport TV post-game.

‘It was a bit hot today so we took things a little bit slow, you know. We tried to keep hold of the ball a little more but we did it very slow, we did it in a slow manner. We didn’t move the ball quick enough.

‘There were times we could have gone forward but we went backwards, too many negative passes. I think second half we improved a little bit more; today wasn’t one of our best games but you know we’re happy for the three points.’

Maluleka went on to compare the Amakhosi squad of last season to the current front-runners to lift the Absa Premiership title at the end of the season.

‘There’s a lot more belief, there’s lot more togetherness. There was togetherness back then but I think now we’re a lot more together and we’re going towards the same goal, we know what we want,’ he added.

‘And you know this is a big brand, if you don’t bring trophies it becomes a problem. It’s all about these people that are here today to support us.

‘We want trophies, we want positive results, we want to play good football and 2020 is a special year for the club as you know, with their 50th anniversary – the chairman, the staff, the family at Kaizer Chiefs. So we want to make sure that we bring something home.’
