Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka is relishing the chance to take on his former team, SuperSport United, in the Absa Premiership on Saturday.
The Glamour Boys are set to welcome SuperSport to the FNB Stadium for their third league encounter this weekend, with kick-off set for 6pm.
Ernst Middendorp’s side will be hoping to claim their third-successive win in the league, after securing victories over Highlands Park and Black Leopards in their first two games of the season.
Commenting on his upcoming clash with the team he represented in two spells, Maluleka told the official club website: ‘Playing against players you are familiar with is always a challenge, because you know each other but it is exciting as well.
‘You always need to make sure you’re at your best for things to come right on the field – I am excited, and I know it’s going to be a challenging game.’
The veteran midfielder is also looking forward to square off against friend and former teammate Ronwen Williams, against whom he has scored twice in previous league games.
‘To be honest, Ronwen is the one I am after. Him and I always have this competition which started on the training ground when we were teammates. So when it happens in a game and I score, I feel like I have the upper hand. I have nothing against him – work is work. To score is always good for your morale and confidence and I am always happy to help the team out,’ he added.
‘We are close on and off the field but like I said, it’s going to be a battle this weekend and all the friendship goes away when we on the field.’
Maluleka, who has been keeping an eye on United, went on to give his thoughts on SuperSport’s recent performances in the league.
‘SuperSport have done very well in their last two games, scoring six goals without conceding. They are looking good and must be high on confidence,’ Maluleka said.
‘We have started very well. We are still coming up and it will be a very intense game with two teams on good form. It is going to be a big game and I am looking forward to it.’
Amakhosi currently occupy second place in the league with six points. Maluleka is targeting a third-consecutive win and another three points.
‘It is very important that we get the three points because we’re playing at home. We need to make sure we have a very high win percentage at home if we want to challenge for the title. To keep the momentum going we need another win and although it is still early on in the season, we need to make sure that we start on a good note.
‘I feel good, I am in a very good space, I am happy and I am healthy. The only thing that made me not perform at the level I demand of myself was the injuries and the knocks,’ Maluleka concluded.
Kaizer Chiefs against SuperSport United kicks off at 6pm.
