Former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe believes that Gift Motupa has the ability to succeed at the club, but encouraged him to make use of his opportunities.

Motupa arrived with much fanfare from Baroka at the Soweto giants in July 2015, but the 22-year-old has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making 34 appearances in all competitions, while netting twice only.

Manenzhe, however, believes that all is not lost with the South Africa U23 international, urging him to use the opportunity handed to him.

‘Having come through Baroka to Pirates is a different kettle of fish all together. The players that come to Pirates should psychologically know that the club has got two or three quality players in every position,’ he told Goal.

‘It’s up to the individual when they are given an opportunity to grab it with both hands. In terms of consistency, I would say the young man has played well and the other games not so well,’ he added.

Despite only featuring twice under Kjell Jonevret this season, both as substitute appearances in the final two league games of the season, Manenzhe is adamant that Motupa is good enough to play for Pirates.

‘In terms of potential and ability, I would say he still has the ability to play for the club. So, it’s just a matter of him being given an opportunity to implement what he learned at the Olympics with the South African Olympic team.

‘One advice I would have for the youngster, is that next time when he is given an opportunity at a team like Pirates he needs to grab it with both hands,’ he concluded.
