Kaizer Chiefs ended their winless run in the Absa Premiership by thumping Cape Town City 4-1 on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
A brace from Khama Billiat and goals from Siyabonga Ngezana and Philani Zulu cancelled out Matthew Rusike’s first-half equaliser as Giovanni Solinas’ men claimed all three points on their travels.
The game got off to a lively start with both sides looking to get on the front foot early on in the match.
However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock after 11 minutes when Ngezana’s header found the net from close range, 1-0.
The home side drew the game level in the 25th minute after Rusike caught the Amakhosi defence napping to head the ball home from a resulting corner, 1-1.
Amakhosi were dealt a blow when Leonardo Castro sustained a knock in the game and was subsequently replaced by veteran striker Bernard Parker minutes before the half-time interval.
The Citizens nearly snatched the lead just before the break, but Surprise Ralani hit the woodwork with his effort.
The game went into the half-time interval with the scoreline locked at 1-1.
The Glamour Boys came out guns blazing in the second half and restored their lead as Billiat’s glancing header beat City shot-stopper Peter Leeuwenburgh to make it 2-1.
Parker had an opportunity to extend Chiefs’ lead even further after 52 minutes, but the veteran striker was unable to steer his volley towards goal.
Billiat should’ve found the net 10 minutes later after latching on to a great pass by Dumisani Zuma, but the Zimbabwean forward blazed his effort wide of the target.
City were then reduced to 10 men after Taariq Fielies received his marching orders for a second yellow card.
Parker had another chance to extend his side’s lead, but could only find the side netting with his effort from inside the box.
Amakhosi capitalised on City being one man down and scored their third goal of the game courtesy of Billiat, who scored his second of the day.
The home side were forced to endure an onslaught by Amakhosi in the closing stages of the game as City looked lost in possession.
However, substitute Zulu put the game to bed in injury time when he latched on to a pass by Hendrick Ekstein to slot the ball past the City goalkeeper as Amakhosi claimed their first win in the Absa Premiership this season.
