Maselesele: Maluleka has not impressed at Chiefs

George Maluleka of Kaizer Chiefs.

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lucky Maselesele feels that George Maluleka has not been able to live up to expectations at the Soweto giants.

Originally a striker, Maluleka underwent a change in position at Ajax Cape Town to become a midfielder. Under the coach at the time, Foppe de Haan, Maluleka thrived in the Mother City before returning to SuperSport United.

The Amakhosi then acted quickly to sign the player from Matsatsantsa in January 2014, but Maluleka has failed to live up to expectations, according to Maselesele.

‘George is a quality player, but if you compare him to when he was playing for Ajax, you will also see that he is not the same. He dipped in form.

‘As a footballer, you need to give your best. He was supposed to shine and be a regular for Bafana. He is at a top team in the country, but I feel he has to be careful. This season if he does not perform consistently, he might have a problem [in terms of game time].’

Maluleka is yet to receive a call-up from the national team despite being a regular for the junior national teams. He, however, looked in good form last season before injuries curtailed his season.

The midfielder and Chiefs will both be hoping that he can hit the ground running and help guide Chiefs out of their trophy drought.
