Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela is aiming to help the club reclaim its glory days and has revealed how Roger Federer winning his 19th grand slam has inspired him to do so.

The Soweto giants have endured two consecutive seasons without silverware under the helm of Steve Komphela  and Masilela is hoping that their fortunes will change in the upcoming season.

‘It’s important for me and the team to keep winning trophies. I have been here [at Chiefs] and we have won two league titles and two trophies [MTN8 and Nedbank Cup]. It’s amazing to win trophies and we want a repeat of that,’ he said at a charity event at Vodacom World.

‘I am a fan of tennis. I saw Roger Federer winning his 19th grand slam.

‘At his age, people were starting to doubt him, so it gives me motivation to see him winning.

‘So we will give it a push. We as a senior players have a role to play. We will have to lead through our performances because we are judged by performances on the field.

‘Two seasons with no trophy is not good for a team like Kaizer Chiefs. But we have opportunity to win something this coming season. Competition is tough and let’s see how it plays out in the first few games,’ he added.

The 32-year-old highlighted the need for Chiefs to tighten their defensive efforts after conceding 28 goals in the 2016-17 Absa Premiership campaign.

‘Obviously we can’t concede as much as we conceded, and at the times we conceded the goals.

‘We conceded at crucial stages, so we must be able to close out games. We do score goals, but we can still improve in that department. We need to improve at both ends,’ he said.
