Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo admits that he is concerned by his side’s recent run of results but insists they will keep on fighting for a first win of the year.
The Urban Warriors winless run was extended on Saturday after they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Maritzburg United when Andrea Fileccia and Brian Onyango cancelled out a goal by Aubrey Funga at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The 53-year-old says believes his side were the better side on the day but admits that he is concerned about the Urban Warriors recent run of performances.
‘You [the media] don’t have to get worried, but I’ve got to get worried and as the coach, I’ve to get worried and yes we are concerned,’ Menzo told the Ajax Cape Town website.
‘If you look at this game I think we were the better team, we had the better chances only we had to score the goals and don’t concede chances and goals like that.
‘I think they had one chance in the first-half [which they scored] and that’s all. In the second-half, they had two chances and the goal they scored was [from] a set-piece.’
Moreover, Menzo underlined that he has the backing of his players as his team now set their sights on overcoming a Highlands Park team equally desperate for a win.
The former Dutch international went on to say that he will continue to lead the fight as the Urban Warriors aim to rediscover their form this season.
‘What do you mean they [players] are still on my side? You saw the whole game so didn’t they respond, yes or no? I think they did respond. For me, they didn’t play badly but they didn’t play well either,’ He added.
‘When you don’t play well don’t give it [the ball] away because we had the chances and don’t give it away so easily.
‘I’m worried yes but I’m fighting and I’m a fighter and I’ll keep on fighting.’
Ajax Cape Town will next take on Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership on April 12.
The match at Cape Town Stadium kicks off at 19:30.
